26th Volcano Triathlon on LanzaroteThe 26th Volcano Triathlon, the Spanish oldest international triathlon will take place on Saturday, the 1st of May 2010. A perfect place and opportunity for many local and international athletes to test themselves and their contenders, before the Ironman Lanzarote race that will take place three weeks later.This year, the field has been limited to 500 for individual participants and the race is fully booked. Many ex pro athletes, such as Danish Rolf Sorensen (pro ciclista and silver medal in Atlanta 96), Jens Toft Danish National sub Champion on Olympic Distance, Rasmus Petraeus, Danish National tean, 5th at European Cup Triathlon, but also active athletes as Ironman Lanzarote Champion 2009 & 2008 Bert Jammaer, local favourites Gregorio Cáceres Morales and Nicholas Ward Muñoz, all three participants of both the Volcano and the Ironman Lanzarote Triathlons 2010. Eva Ledesma, Spanish champion and recent winner of the Elche Triathlon (half distance) will be one of the female favourites.
Next to these elite and known athletes, let’s mention two more relevant competitors: David Deak, who donated a kidney to his father some months ago and who will participate both in this Volcano Triathlon and in the Ironman Lanzarote in three weeks time, trying to qualify for Hawaii, and Alain Fuertes Alduncin, paratriathlete from Basque Land but resident of Alicante, and recently crowned Spanish Champion in Parra Duathlon – in Gijón (17th of April) He will do the Volcano triathlon in a wheelchair. The race is also open to teams, and among the registered teams so far, one is promoted by the charity TRi W.W.W. : two of it’s participants are disabled athletes, the swimmer, Chamaida, has a mental disability and Fran will ride the 10K in a wheelchair.
The Volcano Triathlon will take place on Saturday, 1st of May, but activities around the race start on Friday, with registration (15.00 – 19.00) and briefing (in English) at the Club La Santa Stadium, followed by the traditional Pasta Party in Club La Santa’s Restaurant Atlantico.
