National athletic team of the Czech Republic at CLS
During three weeks the Athletic national team of the Czech Republic is training here at CLS. It is a big group and you can find them training all over the resort: a total of 49 people; 32 sportsmen who do athletics, 3 motor drivers, 6 coaches and some family, friends and sponsors. Michal Pogani arranged this trainings camp to CLS. He is the trainer of one of the athletes in this successful sports group. He has already been at CLS for twenty times now. And he thinks CLS is sport centre number 1 in the world. “Just like you mention on your website, it's true.” He says they come to CLS because in their country it is very cold now and it is snowing. “And we need good facilities.” The Slovakian Michal has been here many times already with athletes from different countries, like Poland, Greece and Bulgaria. Most of the members of the group have been at CLS before as well, because the Czech Republic athletic team comes to CLS twice every year; in December and April.

There are a lot of successful athletes in this national team. They are all specialized in different disciplines. Paula Hamackova for example was Indoor World Champion Pole Vault in 2001. While Věra Cechlová Pospíšilová was 3rd in discus throwing in the World Championships with a distance of 67,71 meters. Another successful athlete who is here with the team is Barbora Spotakova. She is the first woman on the world ranking list in javelin throwing at the moment. Also Tereza Marinova who is Olympic Champion triple jump (2000 in Sydney) joins this training camp. And the final athlete we will mention to give you an idea who is here at the moment is the successful high jumper Thomas Janku, who became second in the last European Championships and is winner of the World Cup. As said before, Michal Pogani is training only one of the athletes here; high jumper Barbora Lallakova (25), who jumps 1,99 meter high. Back home he trains three more athletes, but they couldn't come because they had school exams to attend. All these athletes do high jump, triple jump or long jump, which is Michal´s specialization. Normally the athletes train in eight different sport clubs in the Czech Republic. Most of them do so in the main city Prague. But three or four times a year they have a joined training camp at Club La Santa, or also in the Sierra Nevada, where they have been many times. Here at CLS all the athletes train two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon every day. You can find them at the stadium where they dispose of equipment for the different disciplines, at the gym or at the lagoon to do some running training. They train for disciplines like hurdle running, pole vault, javelin throwing, running and high jumping. They also went outside CLS for their training. During this camp they have been to the surfer's beach ´Famara´ twice to do dome running training. “It is a good beach to train, because it is 2 km long”. |

But Michal says they are not only training here; “we also do some other sports, just for fun, like kayaking and windsurfing.” That is probably why he also brought his wife and child to CLS, because there is also time to relax. His wife, Šárka Kašpárková, is a successful athlete as well. Last year she quit her sports career, but she has many good achievements. For example she became World Champion triple jump in 1997. |

Most of the athletes are staying here for three weeks, like Michal normally also always does too. But not this time, because he has to go back to the Czech Republic to train his other two athletes. “They couldn't come with us because they had school exams”. They are all preparing themselves for the indoor season, which will start on the 20th of January and will last until the 10th of March. After that they will train in the mountains, which will probably be in the Sierra Nevada. “The most important goal of the training in the mountains is to improve their overall fitness. Whereas the training here at CLS is more focused on the technique.” Then the next important competition is the World Championships in Japan in August. In April 2007 the Czech team will be back at CLS again for three weeks. So we hope to see them all again.
