Nicho Ward – Aroa Merino Wine Run Champions

The II Wine Run Lanzarote was so much bigger than the first one… If the 1st edition in 2009 had 301 participants, this year’s race doubled the amount of participants between the half marathon distance and a newly included 11 Km walk.

Before the start, a minute of silence was made in honour to José Saramago who passed away last Friday on the island of Lanzarote.

A beautiful race it was, once again, where the participants enjoy the running and at the same time, the breathtaking landscapes and delicious local wines offered by the 12 bodegas involved in the organization along 10 aid stations.
Some of these also offered typical local food, as goat cheese, small potatoes with “mojo” sauce and “tollo”, dried fish. The volunteers at the aid station, start and finish wear typical clothing, giving an additional folkloric touch to the Wine Run Lanzarote.

The overall winners, both from Lanzarote, Nicholas Ward Muñoz and Aroa Merino Betancor, received the prize in liters of wine, equivalent to their weight in kilos.
For Nicho who took 1 hour 16 minutes and 6 seconds, the reward was 77 kilos of Wine, with the official denomination label, “D.O.C.Lanzarote” and for Aroa who needed 1 hour 22 minutes and 13 seconds, the prize was 42 liters.

Second and third were Víctor Guadalupe (1:17:42) and Henrik Jorgensen (1:18:33) in the men’s race, and Maja Stage Nielsen (1:29:49) and Celia Romero (1:30:32) in the women’s race. All age group winners also received a trophy and prize.

The atmosphere of this race is a mixture of race competition, socializing, and good fun. Many local and Canary Islands politicians participated actively in the 11K walk, a distance that the Cabildo president actually decided to run…!
