School trip - Norwegian Hallingdal Folkehogskole

21 students from the Hallingdal Folkehogskole are having a school trip at CLS. Hallingdal Folkehogskole is a college in Norway where students can go to in between college and university. “Schools like this are very popular in Norway”, Asle Børtnes, one of their teachers, explains us. “At our Folkhogskole you can choose out of 8 different courses, like a photo course or sports course. These students are all doing the sports course. It takes 9 months and during these months they gain a lot of experiences.”

Asle has been working at this school as a PE teacher for 17 years already. So he knows what he is talking about. “After this course the students will go to a university. A lot of them will do a study that is related to sports, but they don't have to. This year helps them to find out what they like and what they want. We want to give the students as much experiences as possible.” To gain these experiences the students go on a lot of sports trips. “In the winter they do a lot of skiing, snowboarding and cross country. But for example they also go on climbing excursions and later in the course they will also go on a sailing trip with another Folkhogskole". Besides learning new things, it is also all about having fun. At the Hallingdal Folkehogskole they like to make the course very wide to give them the opportunity to try out many different sports. “That is why we came to CLS. We heard about CLS through another school and we decided to try it out." It is the 4th time the school organizes a trip to CLS now. We hadn't found a place like this until 4 years ago. Before we came here we had to organize different trips to try out the different sports; now we can do a lot of the sports here.

They are 8 boys and 13 girls, all around 19/20 years old. During the week here at CLS they have to do at least two sport lessons a day. Asle and his colleague teacher are teaching these. “We also use students as teachers when they are capable for that, and only if they want to. One of the students will take care of the tennis class this week. This again will be a new experience.” Besides the two obligatory hours, the students can do whatever they want to do. “But we would like them to try out as many sports as possible. That is the good part about CLS, that you can do so many different things here. Last year we tried about 38 different sports together.”

Every night Asle and his colleague have a meeting in each apartment to discuss what they all have been doing. “We want to know if they liked it and which plans they have for the next day.” And these days they have already been doing a lot of sports. “Some of them had 6 hours of sport yesterday.” Asle also took them out for a bike ride yesterday. They cycled to Famara with mountain bikes. Today all of them will play badminton and squash. And tomorrow they will join the surf school, one of the excursions offered at CLS.  During this excursion they go to the beach of Famara, which is very popular among surfers.

Asle is sure they will come back again next year with another group, because of the facilities but also because of the nice weather. “When we get back to Norway it will be snowing there.”

We are looking forward to their next visit, but for now: all enjoy the rest of your days here!
