Toft - Ledesma win Volcano Tri

Danish Jens Toft Allerup and Spanish Eva Ledesma Calvet won the 26th edition of Volcano Triathlon this Saturday 1st of May!

The Volcano Triathlon is the oldest international triathlon on Spanish soil. For many triathletes, the race is a test before the Ironman Lanzarote Canarias Triathlon Spain, that takes place exactly three weeks later.

Jens Toft was not the first to finish the swimcourse, as his fellow training partner and friend, Rasmus Petraeus is a better swimmer (Petraeus swam the 1500m in 16min56sec whereas Toft needed 17min21sec) - he told us, but he knew that on the bike he would probably be able to overtake him. And, indeed, he managed to do so, but only on the second lap on the road into the village of Soo.
Knowing that he was about a minute ahead of Petraeus, Toft ran the 10K confidently that he would win the race. Third was Bert Jammaer, our Ironman winner in 2009 and 2008.
The first Spanish to cross the finish was Gregorio Cáceres - fifth, behind Brit Daniel Corner and followed by Nicholas Ward Muñoz.

The women's race was won by Spanish Eva Ledesma who came out second of the water, behind Danish Michelle Westerby and who she overtook on the first bike lap. German Natascha Schmidt came in third. Eva Ledesma has been really victorious lately as she won the Double Olympic race Gran Canaria in March and the Arenalaes 113 race (half Ironman distance) in Elche (Alicante) last Sunday, where all along the run course more than hundred special (mentally disabled) volunteers were attending the adistations. Among them, a small group from Lanzarote, accompanied by Club La Santa staff.

Two of these special volunteers participated into the Volcano Triathlon Relay: the TRi W.W.W. Team with Chamaida Cantero on the swim and Fran Toledo in his wheelchair on the run. The team (helped by a non disabled biker) finished in 3:55:26.
Special award was given to wheelchair triathlete from Basque Land, Alain Fuertes Alduncin who was crowned Spanish Champion in Para - Duathlon two weeks ago in Gijón, and for whom the Volcano Triathlon was his very first triathlon. He finished in 4:04:..
